Conversations with the Curator: Victorian Hair Wreaths & Mourning Customs

November 27, 2024, 12:00 pm

Each month, tune in to explore some of our favorite artifacts, delve into the overarching themes of our galleries, or get a sneak peek into the planning and design of an upcoming exhibit.

On November 27, 2024, join our Curator of Exhibitions for a deep dive into Victorian mourning customs, including the symbolism and making of a hair wreath!

In the mid and late 19th centuries, mourning the dead was both a personal and public act, and relied heavily on what historians term “material culture” – physical objects people create and assign meaning to. Objects of material culture served as physical symbols of devotion to and mourning of a loved one, but just as meaningful was the process of creating the items themselves. How did creating these objects help their makers mourn their loved ones? How did these objects and processes help bring people together? How did these items help maintain the Victorian ideal of the “good death?”
