Book Talk: The Letters of Mary Penry: A Single Moravian Woman in Early America

November 1, 2018, 6:00 pm

Mary Penry was a Welsh immigrant to Pennsylvania who moved to Bethlehem in 1756 and lived in Moravian communities for the next fifty years. Dr. Scott Paul Gordon of Lehigh University has compiled, transcribed, and annotated a collection of her letters, which has just been published by Penn State University Press.

Penry described herself as a “great Politician” and wrote memorably about the politics and society of early America. Her letters provide unprecedented access to the intimate world of a single woman during the Revolution and early republic.
