Día de los Muertos: A Celebration of Community and Tradition

October 22, 2023, 2:00-4:00 pm, John R. Austen Auditorium

Día de los Muertos (in English, “Day of the Dead”) celebrates and honors the lives and memories of our loved ones who have passed away. Join us for an informational program and interactive workshop to celebrate our community’s stories and share your own.

While the Día de los Muertos is celebrated throughout Latin America, presenter Adriana Santos will talk specifically about the blend of indigenous and Spanish Catholic traditions of Mexico, and the resulting cultural clashes of both the past and the present.

The program will be followed by a Marigolds & Papel Picado Interactive Workshop. Papel picado is used in many ways, such as in place mats, flags, and banners. Guests will learn how to create paper marigolds and papel picado that they can bring home with them.

Guests are encouraged to bring photographs of their loved for temporary display on a community-built altar (you will be able to take you photographs home with you after the program.)

We welcome you to explore our community’s stories and share you own.

This program is free and open to the public, and is funded by funds received through the County of Northampton’s Hotel Tax Grant program.
