Growing Up Black in Easton: An Afternoon with Dr. Karen Britt

Please join us for an afternoon of conversation and insight with Dr. Karen Britt, Professor of Business and Economics and founder of Juneteenth Lehigh Valley.

Dr. Britt will speak about her childhood growing up black in Easton, the dichotomy she saw between different neighborhoods, the changes in her educational experiences, and the cultural shifts she encountered coming of age in the 1970s.

This program is being held in collaboration with the American Association of University Women, Easton PA Branch.

Following the conversation, Dr. Britt and the AAUW will provide participants with action steps to further our understandings of power, privilege, and equity.

About Dr. Karen Britt:

Karen S. Britt is a Professor of Business/Economics at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA and an Adjunct Faculty member at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. Her career in higher education includes academic administration and instruction with specific emphasis on non-traditional students and programming. Her most recent research investigates the writing skill of business students and their preparation for the workplace. She holds a B.S. and M.S. from Penn State University’s Smeal College of Business and an Ed.D. in Leadership and Management from Drexel University. Karen’s family roots in Easton, PA date back to the mid 1920’s with a strong Christian faith and belief coupled with community activism. Her participation as a young person in the NAACP-Easton Branch Youth Council and Adult Branch provided a foundation for her current community involvement. She has recently launched Juneteenth Lehigh Valley, a non-profit organization that acknowledges the endurance of enslaved Africans, celebrates the end of slavery, and educates all on authentic American History.

Karen and her husband James reside in Coplay, PA, they have two daughters, a son-in-love, and a wonderful grandson (flowers from life’s garden).
