In the mid-nineteenth century, the Victorian craze for spiritualism and all things supernatural swept through the United States. Mediums held seances in parlors, fortune-telling games skyrocketed in popularity, and photographers offered misty portraits of the dearly departed standing with grieving family members.
Mediums in the Parlor: A Victorian Tea Party will feature an historical overview of nineteenth century spiritualism, and how this phenomenon influenced many of our modern Halloween customs and modern pop culture. The afternoon will be educational with light participatory activities, with a focus on historical context.
Light refreshments will be provided, though please note that traditional afternoon tea fare does include dairy.
