Tenement Museum

The Tenement Museum tells the stories of immigrants who started their lives anew on Manhattan’s Lower East Side between the 19th and 21st centuries in the recreated apartment and businesses of real families in two historic tenement buildings. The tenements housed over 15,000 working class immigrants from over 20 nations while they served as residences.

Choose between two guided tours:

Under One Roof” (new exhibition) at 103 Orchard Street: 90 minutes, accessible by elevator, limited wheelchair accessibility – Please indicate if you need a wheelchair when making your reservation.

In the decades after World War II, the Lower East Side became one of New York’s most diverse neighborhoods. Visit the homes of Bella Epstein, whose parents survived the Holocaust, Jose and Andy Velez, whose mother left Puerto Rico for garment work, and the Wong siblings, whose stories of their mother and other garment workers are highlighted in an interactive, recreated Chinatown garment shop.

Hard Times” – 2nd floor, 97 Orchard Street: 60 minutes, no elevator accessibility (24 steps up, 23 steps down); participants will have time to watch a short documentary or visit the Museum Shop after their tour.

Discover how the Baldizzis, an Italian-Catholic family, lived through the Great Depression. Explore their daily lives, the challenges they faced, and how they supported themselves in the Lower East Side of the 1930s.

Fraunces Tavern – Lunch

Established as a colonial tavern in 1762, Fraunces Museum and Restaurant now occupy five buildings on the historic Fraunces Tavern Block. The tavern was once a headquarters for George Washington, a venue for peace negotiations with the British during the American Revolution, and home to federal offices in the Early Republic. Guests will dine together in the Bissell Room with the following lunch options:

  • Chicken Salad Sandwich (tomato, lettuce, celery, and eggs)  OR
  • Roasted Portobello Sandwich (red peppers, lettuce, tomato, mozzarella, sweet balsamic reduction)

Dessert: Brownies with whipped cream

Unlimited soda, juice, tea and coffee service

Merchant’s House Museum – Guided Tour

Note: not wheelchair accessible. This house has multiple levels and no elevator. Be prepared for stairs.

In 1832, Joseph Brewster built a brick and marble row house on Fourth Street in what was then a quiet, exclusive suburb of New York City. In 1835, just three years later, the house was purchased by a prosperous hardware merchant, Seabury Tredwell, and the Tredwell family continued to live in the house for almost 100 years. Today that merchant’s house still stands. It has been open to the public as a museum since 1936.

Considered one of the finest surviving examples of domestic architecture from the period, the 1832 late-Federal and Greek Revival Merchant’s House is a designated landmark. The museum’s collection of over 3,000 items comprises the possessions of the Tredwells, the wealthy merchant-class family who live in the House from 1835 to 1933. The collection includes furniture, decorative arts, clothing, photographs and books, household items, and personal items.
