The Time Capsule of Frida Kahlo

September 25, 2022, 2:00 pm, John R. Austen Auditorium

Have you ever heard of a time capsule in a bathroom? Well, that’s what happened to Frida Kahlo!

Frida, the famous Mexican painter, is well known for her self-portraits full of symbolism and color. However, few know that after she passed away, her husband, renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, placed many of her belongings in the bathroom of their home. Fifty years later, the items were rediscovered after the bathroom was finally opened.

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón (known most commonly as simply Frida Kahlo) grew up during the Mexican civil war–La Revolución Mexicana. After experiencing a terrible accident, she immersed herself in painting, creating rich depictions of Mexican culture and history that explore themes of identity, gender, class, and race in Mexican society.

During most of her life she was known as Mrs. Rivera, the wife of Diego Rivera. However, it wasn’t until she passed away that her fame surpassed that of her husband, and even inspired a new movement called Fridomania.

Join us to travel through time and meet Frida, hear more details about her family, friends, trips and collections!
