Lunch & Learn: Historic Maps of Easton and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

February 5, 2020, 12:30-1:30 pm

Take a mid-day break, bring a brown bag lunch or order a boxed lunch from Pie + Tart, and learn something new with our Lunch & Learn series. Lunch & Learn programs will be held the first Wednesday of the month from 12:30-1:30 pm. Visit the Sigal Museum for an informal talk, workshop, or discussion.

This month’s speaker: Librarian John Clark of Lafayette College will give an illustrated talk about scanned images of historic maps and their use in teaching and scholarship. Digital images of historic maps are now widely available on-line. And, with the use of GIS technology, they can be georeferenced into overlays of the current landscape. This lecture will use examples of local historical maps of Easton from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries to show how information can be extracted from these maps in GIS formats and used to track changes in land use over many generations.

John H. Clark is the Data Visualization and Geographic Information Systems Librarian, Digital Scholarship Services, at David B. Skillman Library, Lafayette College.

Free for members; $5 suggested donation for non-members.
