A Journey to the Past: Historic Photographers and Photo Walkabout

April 27, 2019, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, Passport to History Day program with Historic Easton Cemetery

Celebrate Passport to History Day with our friends at Historic Easton Cemetery!

Tours: Guides will be at the main gate from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to answer questions and hand out self-guided walking tour booklets. One is a general tour of the cemetery including the gravesite of George Taylor, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The second is a tour of “Notables” associated with Lafayette including the gravesite of the founder of the college, James Madison Porter.

Gardening: If you love gardening, representatives from two gardening projects in the cemetery will be available to talk about volunteer opportunities. Several local master gardeners are working with the cemetery on preserving the roses while others are conducting research on the best plants to use in the gravestone planters.

Journey to the Past: Historic Photography Lecture and Photo Walkabout (2:00 p.m. lecture, 3:00-5:00 p.m. photo walkabout): Photographers: bring your camera and plan to attend a talk – “A Journey to the Past” at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel on the cemetery grounds, followed by a walk from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Len Buscemi, Ed Eckstein and Chris Karfakis will talk about the history of photography, cameras and two noted local photographers. Reuben Knecht opened the first photography studio in Easton in 1848 and received a patent in 1854. Norma McFall Collmar created a pictorial history of Easton during the 1890s and 1900s. Following the talk, walk through the cemetery grounds with the speakers as they provide information about taking better pictures.
