Waiting to Be Heard: Recreating the Forgotten Voices of the Women of the American Revolution

October 12, 2019, 2:00 pm, with historian and author Susan Holloway Scott

In her acclaimed novels, bestselling author and historian Susan Holloway Scott weaves carefully researched fact with written drama to explore the lives and legacies of women who history has silenced, forgotten, or relegated to the shadows of their famous husbands.

Her previous novel, I, Eliza Hamilton tells the story of the marriage of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton through Eliza’s eyes. In her new book, The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr, she recreates the story of Mary Emmons, an enslaved servant in the household of Aaron Burr, the mother of his two children – and, according to family tradition, his wife as well. Holloway Scott will discuss the lives of Eliza Hamilton and Mary Emmons and their impact on the famous men in their lives. She’ll also describe how she discovered their stories, and how her research extends beyond libraries and archives to recreate the lives and voices of these remarkable women of the American Revolution.

Copies of The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr will be available for purchase and signing.

Free with museum admission or $5 program only.
